TREZOR Wallet introduces multi-currency support for DASH and Zcash, in addition to Bitcoin. Managing multiple digital currencies can now be done comfortably from one place.

Rationale for Multi-currency

Up until now, TREZOR Wallet has only been offering a simple Bitcoin wallet interface, while TREZOR itself has been expanding support to various other cryptocurrencies. With development of the latter, a growing voice of the community has requested integration of different currencies into TREZOR Wallet as well.

After investigating the viability of this project, we realized that this was doable into a certain extent. TREZOR Wallet utilizes Insight/Bitcore in order to grab information about cryptocurrency/blockchain. A functioning Insight is therefore the main requirement for integration of any coin into TREZOR Wallet.

Aside from Bitcoin, DASH and Zcash have working Insight forks and were therefore easily integrated into TREZOR Wallet.

Zcash T-addresses Only

TREZOR Wallet only supports T-addresses only. This is due to the hardware limitations of the device and the requirements of Z-addresses. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Please be especially attentive to this limitation, if you are mining on a Zcash pool. The payouts might be only spendable by a Z-address.

Bitcore Servers Deployed

Some of you might not be surprised by this update, as you have been testing it on the public beta version of TREZOR Wallet. However, the reliability of the beta was not always perfect, which pushed back full release.

We are happy to announce that this spottiness will no longer be an issue. We have successfully deployed additional Insight/Bitcore servers for multi-currency support to address availability issues on the beta. As we are now using self-hosted servers, the speed of the Wallet should be greatly increased.

Currency Switching in TREZOR Wallet

Simply choose your selected coin from the drop-down menu in the left panel of TREZOR Wallet. If you want to explore additional settings, or set your own Bitcore servers, you can go to the App Settings, also accessible from the left panel.

All of your cryptocurrencies on TREZOR are stored under the same Recovery seed. If you need to recover your Zcash, DASH or Ethereum wallet, use the same seed as if you were recovering your Bitcoin wallet. Recovering a seed on TREZOR will restore all of your cryptocurrencies, which were previously saved under the seed.

TREZOR Firmware Update 1.4.2

The update to new TREZOR Wallet at wallet.trezor.io is automatic, and no action is needed from your side. On the other hand, various coin support in TREZOR is dependent on the firmware you are running. DASH and Zcash are fully supported from FW version 1.4.2.

Beta FW 1.4.1 also supports DASH and Zcash, but there were some bugfixes implemented in this update. If you were previously using the beta (FW 1.4.1), it is highly recommended you update to the newest version.

Changelog: Version 1.4.2

  • Stable release, optional update
  • New Matrix-based Recovery Method*
  • Minor Ethereum Fixes (including EIP-155 replay protection)
  • Minor USB, U2F and GPG Fixes
  • Automatic U2F Counter Restoration on Recovery

*Teaser: Matrix-based Recovery Method

Together with the new firmware, we are also introducing an advanced recovery method, which allows you to securely input your recovery seed into the TREZOR without exposing the seed to the computer. In essence, you will enter the letters through the PIN pad displayed on the computer, according to the keypad layout given to you by the TREZOR screen. Same way as the PIN, but this time the layout will change with each click.

Update (8 March 2017): “Matrix Recovery,” dubbed as Advanced Recovery in TREZOR Wallet, can be used from the Release 12 version of the Wallet. Just select “Advanced Recovery” during the restoration process!

For advanced users, with trezorctl installed on their computers, you can prompt the recovery with the following command:

trezorctl recovery_device -t matrix

This would not have been possible without the great work of Jochen Hoenicke, the amazing hacker of the TREZOR Team! Thanks!
