June, 20 2016 — SatoshiLabs, creator of TREZOR, the most trusted and ubiquitous hardware wallet for digital currencies, today released a new update to TREZOR Firmware.

1. Steps Towards SegWit

In preparation for implementation of Segregated Witness (segwit) TREZOR can now process advanced transaction features (such as RBF and CLTV). One example of the advanced features is the possibility to override user’s own transaction by another transaction with higher fees. This may be especially useful when the original transaction has not been processed by the bitcoin network fast enough.

2. GPG Keys

TREZOR can now securely generate GPG keys for signing of emails or documents (using the NIST256P1 and Ed25519 curves). Currently, this update does not allow for GPG decryption, a feature planned for next firmware update. For more information check out the great TREZOR Agent by Roman Zeyde.

3. SSH Login Updates

The Ed25519 curve can now be used for SSH login now, alongside the NIST256P1.

Recent firmware update also implements a strengthened security for derivation of private keys used for NIST256P1 and Ed25519 curves. As a result, users who already generated SSH keys using older firmware will need to regenerate SSH keys using the 1.3.6 firmware in order to continue using TREZOR for SSH login.

4. Sign & Verify Messages

Message signing and verification is now possible with other crypto-currencies such as DASH or Litecoin.

Verifying signed messages with all supported currencies including Bitcoin gets even more secure — thanks to the newly added visual address check using the TREZOR display.

How to do a TREZOR Firmware update?

When you visit myTrezor.com you should see a banner informing you about the available TREZOR firmware update. Without closing the website tab, unplug your TREZOR and plug it back again while holding both buttons pressed. Finally, confirm the update by pressing the button of your TREZOR device.

TREZOR Bridge users will be prompted to update the Bridge as well.
